Lennon used the guitar on The Beatles' second appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show when an estimated 70 million viewers tuned in to watch the show in February 1964. It was also slightly smaller than the earlier model. The 1964 model was similar to John's first 325 but with a thinner body, an extra balance knob and an Accent vibrato. The guitar was made especially for him by Rickenbacker and sent directly from their California factory to the hotel in Miami where the group were staying as a replacement for his road-weary 1958-model. This was John Lennon's second Rickenbacker 325 Capri and was sent to him while on the first US tour with The Beatles. All subsequent production short-scale 300-series Rickenbackers (310, 315, 320, 325) had sound holes until the late 1970s. John Lennon's 1958 model was among the first batch made and has the pre-production feature of a solid top with no sound hole. These instruments gained prominence due to John Lennon's use of a 325 during the early years of The Beatles.

This series is currently available only in 'C' reissue form. The body is unbound, semi-hollow, with 2 o'clock angled sound hole (although re-issues lack a sound hole due to the Lennon connection), and boasts the 'crescent moon'-style cutaways.

This guitar was originally given to John Lennon by Rose-Morris, the official UK importer of Rickenbacker, when his 1964.

The guitar is semi-hollow bodied with an F-hole, in fireglo finish, serial number DE519. short scale, dot fretboard inlays, and a small ( Script error: No such module 'convert'.) body. A 1964 Rose-Morris Rickenbacker, model 1996, nick-named The Beatle Backer owned by John Lennon and later gifted to Ringo Starr. Production models were Script error: No such module 'convert'. It was designed by Roger Rossmeisl, a guitar craftsman from a family of German instrument makers.
